Dawson State Jail Inmate Mail
Inmates are allowed to receive letters and photos (no polaroids, or nude photos). Some institutions will allow you to send paper, read the guide for family members and friends of inmates for more information. Your complete name and address must be written legibly in the return address area of the envelope. When sending correspondence always include the inmates name and Identification number as the mailing address above shows, if you know the housing unit please list that as well. Do not mark the envelope or letter in any way. No stamps, pens or pencils, small trinkets, or jewelry or other items should ever be mailed with the correspondence. Staples, paperclips, lipstick, perfume, crayon art, stickers, drawings or markings of any kind will result in the correspondence being returned. Holiday Packages/Online Commissary for Texas Inmates
To send a Holiday package to an offender in Texas use the newly launched eCommDirect found here. This is a site run by the Texas department of Criminal Justice and allows you to put money into an inmates account as well as purchase items from the commissary.
Friends and family may purchase each eligible offender up to $50.00 in goods per calendar quarter.
Offenders are limited to one purchase per day.
Calendar quarters are:
January 1 – March 31
April 1 – June 30
July 1 – September 30
October 1 – December 31
PURCHASES MAY ONLY BE MADE BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 4AM-9PM.
Sending Money to an inmate in Texas
You can now send money to an inmate online through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at eCommDirect.
Family members and friends can send money to an inmate several ways.
- Money orders or cashier’s checks made payable to “Inmate Trust Fund for Offender Name and Number”. You will need to obtain deposit slips from the offender or by sending a self addressed, stamped envelope to Inmate Trust Fund; send deposits and requests for deposit slips to:

- Monthly Checking Account Debit (ACH), (Free service provided by TDCJ.) complete an ACH authorization form and have a set amount automatically debited from a personal checking account once each month for deposit to a specified offender; attach a voided check from the account to be debited; debit transaction will occur on the 5th of each month. Submit form with voided check to:

Western Union Quick Collect (fees vary) from anywhere in the United States. Deposit will post to offender’s account within 24 hours. For each Quick Collect transaction the following information must be provided:

Offender’s TDCJ number and offender’s last name

Bring cash to the MoneyGram agent location and fill out the blue form with the following information:

Be sure to keep the reference or check number that confirms your transaction with any of the above methods.
To check on a deposit call (936) 438-8990 and provide inmate TDCJ number, inmate name, your name, amount of deposit and the date it was sent. We will only verify this information to the sender. Inmate account balances are confidential and cannot be shared with anyone but the inmate.

Visiting an Inmate at Dawson State Jail
The Texas department of correction encourages friends and family members of inmates who demonstrate a positive influence to communicate and visit with an inmate. This can help in the rehabilitation process, and eventually with his or her reintegration back into society. Below are important things you should know if you are planning on visiting an inmate incarcerated in the Texas Department of Corrections.

Visiting Hours are as follows:
Visits are normally conducted on Saturdays and Sundays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The names of all visitors, 18 years old and older (except offender’s attorney), must be on the approved Visitors list, with a limit of 10 people.
