Cibola County Correctional Center

Opened in 1993, Cibola County Correctional Center is a minimum prison security managed by the Corrections Corporation of America. The facility is designed for male offenders.  The capacity of the prison is 1129 prisoners. The facility houses minimum security prisoners who are under contract with both the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the United States Marshal Service.  In June 2002, statistics demonstrated that 95% of the prisoners at the correctional center were undocumented Mexican nationals.  As of August 2016, Justice Department officials stated that the Federal Bureau of Prisons would no longer form contracts with private facilities like Cibola County Correctional Center.  The FBOP claimed that private prisons are not only less safe, but do not have as many services for the inmates and are not cost effective.  The FBOP plans on letting its contracts with the 13 private prisons, including Cibola County CI, to expire.  As a result, Cibola County CI was expected to close in October of 2016 because its contract had not been renewed. 

Several protests have broke out within the facility.  On April 23, 2001, approximately 700 prisoners staged a protest against the poor prison conditions.  Although this protest was supposed to be a non-violent protest, it resulted in the protesters getting tear-gassed.  Another protest in March of 2013 involved 250 inmates.  These protesters also protested in a non-violent way, and this time the protest was ended in a peaceful way.  Prison officials would not reveal what the reasoning behind this protest was. 

Visiting Hours at Cibola County Correctional Center:

• Visitation to Cibola County Correctional Center takes place on weekends and federal holidays.  The visiting hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
• Visits will terminate as overcrowding occurs.
• Any visitor who is 16 years of age and older must provide valid photo identification in order to enter the visiting room.
• $40.00 in change may be brought into the facility for the refreshments at the vending machines.  This money should be kept in a clear bag or coin purse. 
• If an infant is with a group of visitors, necessary items for the infant may be brought in the visiting room.  However, these items should be brought in reasonable amounts.
• All items that are not permitted in the visiting room should be kept in the car of the visitor or placed in the visitor lockers provided by the prison.
