Visiting an Inmate at Downstate Correctional Facility

The New York department of correction encourages friends and family members of inmates who demonstrate a positive influence to communicate and visit with an inmate. This can help the inmate in the rehabilitation process, and eventually with his or her reintegration back into society.

Visiting days and times vary from facility to facility.  They are influenced by the security level and population concerns. At many facilities, you may only visit on certain days of the week, for example, by last name (A-L) (M-Z) or by the inmate’s DIN. As a general rule, maximum security facilities have visiting on a daily basis.
Medium and minimum security facilities have visiting on weekends and holidays.
Work Release facilities have visiting for inmates in restriction units only.
Shock Incarceration inmates have visiting every other weekend.

You should always contact the facility for the specific visiting schedule prior to visiting.

Generally visitation begins at 7:30 am and end at 3:00 pm. Some may even include evening hours. Many visiting rooms become very crowded and often visitors are required to end visitation early as there are others waiting to get in.

Contact the facility prior to your initial visit to determine the visiting policy.

Visiting Hours are as follows:

Inmate phone calls in NY

When are inmates able to make phone calls?

BPRichfield's picture

Phone calls from inmates

In order to receive a call from an inmate you will need to be on the inmate's approved telephone list.  Also you should know these calls will go out collect and you will be charged for the call.  Cell phones cannot receive incoming collect calls so if you are expecting to receive a phone call on your cell phone it's not going to happen.  Inmate's approved phone lists will be co-ordinated between the inmate and their counselor on a quarterly basis.  Inmate's are allowed up to 15 different numbers on their approved call list.  All converstations are recorded and not to exceed 30 minutes in length (ten minutes when it is busy).

If you are waiting to hear from your inmate and are unsure what is going on you can always write to them at the inmate mailing address provided at the top of this page.  Expect a response in 1 week or more.

Myvconnect is a telephone service offered to inmates located in a New York State prison, you can get to their website here.

Hope this helps!

package returned

My aunt just tried to send a package to my brother and a bunch of the stuff got sent back with no explanation. In the returned items there was pencils, notebooks, candy, crackers, a small nail clipper so I am not sure what they can have and I have been searching online to find out...

sending packages

U can go to any post office and send the package....the package usually is priced by weight and how soon you want it to get to the person....also tge person is only allowed no more then 35 lbs a month in a package so if you send more they wont get it....and they wont save it for next month...they will ask them if they want to send it back which will come out of the inmates commissary or wait for you to visit tge person if its within two weeks....i found a good way to send a package if u you have more then 35 lbs is wait until the end of the month like now send half Andre send the other half the beginning of March so they get both packages back to back but not in the same month....
