Visiting an Inmate at Downstate Correctional Facility

The New York department of correction encourages friends and family members of inmates who demonstrate a positive influence to communicate and visit with an inmate. This can help the inmate in the rehabilitation process, and eventually with his or her reintegration back into society.

Before visiting you may want to read our Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Visitation here.

Be sure to bring a valid state ID, such as a drivers license or you will not be admitted to visitation.  Up to 3 visitors at a time are allowed.  Vending machines for snacks and drinks are available to you during visitation so remember to bring small bills or change to make a purchase for you and your inmate.  Visitation is in a general purpose room, not behind glass or anything.  Visitors are prohibited from engaging in any conversation etc with other visitors or inmates other then the one you are their to visit.

You should always contact the facility for the specific visiting schedule prior to visiting.

Generally visitation begins at 7:30 am and ends at 3:00 pm, but you will not be admitted to visitation if you arrive 2:30pm or later. Some may even include evening hours. Many visiting rooms become very crowded and often visitors are required to end visitation early as there are others waiting to get in.

Contact the facility prior to your initial visit to determine the visiting policy.

Visiting Hours are as follows:
Visitation is 8:30am-3:15pm every day, 7 days a week.  New commitments require two weeks before they can receive visitation.  This facility requests that you contact them by phone between 1pm-5pm 24 hours prior to visiting to ensure the inmate is still housed there and not being transferred.

Taking pictures while visiting Downstate Correctional

Do anyone know can they take pictures there and if so how much do you gotta pay for them ??

visitation days and times at Downstate.

Does anyone know the rules for visiting at Downstate?  Schedule of days and times you can visit? Is there a time that you have to wait before you can visit an inmate who has just been transferred there? I can't seem to find this information anywhere!

Downstate Correctional Visiting hours

Just contacted Downstate Correctional in New York, they said visiting hours are 7 days a week from 8:30am-3:15pm.  They also request that you contact them a day prior to visiting to ensure the inmate is eligible for visitation and still housed at this facility.  When the inmate first gets to this facility they will need to wait two Saturdays before they can have visitation.  Visiting is held in a general purpose room with tables similar to a school cafeteria.  You can have up to 3 visitors at a time.  You can bring small bills and change to purchase snacks and drinks from the vending machines.  Visitors are not admitted to visitation if they arrive after 2:30pm.  Just remember you are not allowed to interact with any other inmates or visitors during visitation, just the inmate you came to see.  The most important thing you can do to make visitation enjoyable is purchasing snacks from the machines as this seems to be a special treat all inmates enjoy.  Best of luck, let us know how your visit turns out and if you have anything new to add to this page.

They must of changed the time when you can arrive and still get up.

They now stop letting people up at 2:15

Inmate phone calls in NY

When are inmates able to make phone calls?

Phone calls from inmates

In order to receive a call from an inmate you will need to be on the inmate's approved telephone list.  Also you should know these calls will go out collect and you will be charged for the call.  Cell phones cannot receive incoming collect calls so if you are expecting to receive a phone call on your cell phone it's not going to happen.  Inmate's approved phone lists will be co-ordinated between the inmate and their counselor on a quarterly basis.  Inmate's are allowed up to 15 different numbers on their approved call list.  All converstations are recorded and not to exceed 30 minutes in length (ten minutes when it is busy).

If you are waiting to hear from your inmate and are unsure what is going on you can always write to them at the inmate mailing address provided at the top of this page.  Expect a response in 1 week or more.

Myvconnect is a telephone service offered to inmates located in a New York State prison, you can get to their website here.

Hope this helps!

package returned

My aunt just tried to send a package to my brother and a bunch of the stuff got sent back with no explanation. In the returned items there was pencils, notebooks, candy, crackers, a small nail clipper so I am not sure what they can have and I have been searching online to find out...

sending packages

U can go to any post office and send the package....the package usually is priced by weight and how soon you want it to get to the person....also tge person is only allowed no more then 35 lbs a month in a package so if you send more they wont get it....and they wont save it for next month...they will ask them if they want to send it back which will come out of the inmates commissary or wait for you to visit tge person if its within two weeks....i found a good way to send a package if u you have more then 35 lbs is wait until the end of the month like now send half Andre send the other half the beginning of March so they get both packages back to back but not in the same month....
