Lompoc Federal Correctional Institution is a lower security prison that is part of the Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex.  Lompoc FCI is located in Lompoc of Santa Barbara County, California.  The facility holds male prisoners only, and currently holds 1,342 inmates.  The facility is made up of 4 main housing units, two of which are dormitory style. 

FCI Lompoc requires all inmates to participate in work assignments or educational programs.  Work assignments include food service (cooks, bakers, butchers), mechanical service (electricians, plumbers, carpenters), education/recreation service (librarians, clerks, tutors), laundry, and unit orderlies.  The prison also operates farm where the inmates can also be assigned work.  Educational programs available to the prisoners include General Education Development Program (the GED Program), the Spanish GED, English as a Second Language, Adult Continuing Education, Post-Secondary Education, Parenting, Vocational Training, apprenticeships, and release preparation.  Recreational activities are also organized for the inmates.  Recreational activities include softball, basketball, crafts, and other leisure activities.  A Residential Drug Abuse Program is also offered, and those who participate in this program can result in a one year sentence reduction.  

On January 21st, 1980 a prison escape occurred at Lompoc Federal Correctional Institution.  Offender Christopher Boyce made an escape from the facility with the help of several other inmates.  Boyce was serving a 40 year sentence for spying for the Soviet Union.  To escape, Boyce hid in a drainage hole, used a makeshift ladder, and cut through the barbed wire perimeter fence with small tin scissors.  Boyce was on the run for 20 months, until he was finally captured by FBI agents and U.S. Marshals in Port Angeles, Washington on August 21st, 1981.  This incident was known as one of the most complex manhunts in history of the U.S. Marshals Service.  

Visiting Hours at Lompoc Federal Correctional Institution:

  • Visits to Lompoc FCI are conducted on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays.  Visitation runs from 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on each of these days. 
  • Inmates are granted 6 visiting points each month.  Each visit will deduct 2 points from the inmates total visiting points.
  • Prisoners can have up to 4 visitors at a time, inclusive of children.  Any visitor under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • All visitors who are 16 years of age and older must provide valid photo identification in order to visit.
  • All visitors are required to pass through a walk-through metal detector.  Visitors could also be subject to random pat searches.
  • As the visiting room overcrowds, visits will be terminated.  First, volunteers will be asked to leave and then local visitors will be asked to leave next.
  • A children's play area is available for the children.  However, visitors are responsible and must keep watch on the children they bring to visit.  Inmates are not permitted in the children's play area at any given time.
  • Kissing and embracing are only permitted at the beginning and end of each visit.  Hand holding is the only physical contact permitted for the duration of the visit. 
  • Vending machines are available for visitor use only.
  • The following items are permitted in the visiting area:
    • Up to $20.00 in either quarters, one-dollar bill denominations, or five-dollar bill denominations
    • 1 clear bag/purse no larger than 8 inches
    • Necessary amount of prescription medications
    • Necessary infant supplies
  • If an infant is being brought into the visiting room, the following items are permitted in the visiting room for the infant:
    • 2 empty nursing bottles
    • 6 diapers
    • Baby wipes, must be in a clear container or bag
    • Change of clothing
    • 2 baby blankets, no larger than 2 feet x 3 feet
    • All formula and baby food must be sealed
