Visiting an Inmate at Powhatan Correctional Center

The Virginia department of correction encourages friends and family members of inmates who serve as good roles models to communicate and visit with an inmate.  This can help the inmate in the rehabilitation process, and eventually with his or her reintegration back into society.  Below are some things you should know, and important forms you will need to fill out if you are planning on visiting an inmate incarcerated in a Virginia prison.

You must be on the inmate's approved visitation list prior to visiting.

Fill out and submit a Virginia Visiting Application Online here..

For a visiting application in Español click here.

Download a legal visiting application here if you are an attorney.

Minors (anyone under the age of 18) visiting this prison must fill out a notarized minor statement.

Some facilities in Virginia offer video visitation, click here to read more about it.

The dress regulations for visiting should be read prior to your first visit.

Visiting Hours are as follows:
All institutions have general population visiting hours on Saturday, Sunday and State holidays.  Contact the institution at the telephone number provided above or read the family and friends of inmates handbook here for more information.

Visitation Powhatatan Correctional Facility

My husband (Wesley W.) was just transfered to Powhatatan on the 10th of December.  How long till I can visit with him.  I have heard that there is a 2 week period of (Lock Down) where no visitation is allowed?  I visited my husband weekly before he was moved.  He helps keep him calm and in have a positive outlook on the situation at hand.  As his wife do I need to fill out the application online as well.  I was on his visitation log in Harrisonburg/Rockingham Regional and they told me that I would be automatically transfered on his visitation log.  I have a two hour drive to Powhatan and just want to make sure I have everything in order before making the trip.  I have asked Wes to find out what information he can so that we can hopefully see each other for Christmas.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated by not only me, his wife but our children as well.  Only I will be visiting I want to see the facility and how things are before exposing the kids to it.

Thanks,

Malinda W.

re: Visiting Powhatan

Did you have to fill out a visiting application the first time, when he was located at the jail?  If not then I would advise taking the time to fill out the application on this page and submitting it before visiting, because they will want to do a background check and give you approval.  Many times when an inmate is incarcerated at a jail they do not require a background check for visitation, where the prisons do.  It may be to early to submit an application and have it approved by Christmas, as this is the busiest time of year for visitation.  If you want to know for sure you can call the facility at the number provided on the top of this page and explain to them your situation and ask them.  It is a good idea to visit before you bring your children, just be sure when you are ready to bring your children that you fill out the minor visitation authorization forms found on this page.  Also, please reply to this comment with what the facility tells you about your question to help others who may be in a similar situation.
