Visiting an Inmate at Ulster Correctional Facility

The New York department of correction encourages friends and family members of inmates who demonstrate a positive influence to communicate and visit with an inmate. This can help the inmate in the rehabilitation process, and eventually with his or her reintegration back into society.

Visiting days and times vary from facility to facility.  They are influenced by the security level and population concerns. At many facilities, you may only visit on certain days of the week, for example, by last name (A-L) (M-Z) or by the inmate’s DIN. As a general rule, maximum security facilities have visiting on a daily basis.
Medium and minimum security facilities have visiting on weekends and holidays.
Work Release facilities have visiting for inmates in restriction units only.
Shock Incarceration inmates have visiting every other weekend.

You should always contact the facility for the specific visiting schedule prior to visiting.

Many visiting rooms become very crowded and often visitors are required to end visitation early as there are others waiting to get in.

Contact the facility prior to your initial visit to determine the visiting policy.

Visiting Hours are as follows:
Visiting for inmates will alternate on an odd/even schedule depending on the inmates ID number.  Visiting is on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30am - 2:30pm as well as all federal holidays.  You will need to contact the institution at the telephone number provided above, and have your inmate's ID number ready for them to tell you which weekends they are allowed visitation for the month (the schedule changes regularly).

How inmates get stamps to mail things

Inmates can purchase stamps through the commissary using funds from their personal inmate trust account.  If the inmate is indigent and has no funds they will be given a small amount of postage each month.

Sending a letter

Is the DIN number and the ID number the same thing?

DIN Number on letters

Sending it with the DIN (department identification number) should work, just be sure you send it to the correct facility and with the inmates full name.  Also remember you need to include your complete return address in the upper left hand corner of the envelope.

Visitation times

I have posted the visiting hours 8:30am-2:30pm Saturday, Sunday and all Federal Holidays above, but you will still need to contact the institution with the inmates ID number to get which weekend your inmate is allowed visitation, because this prison alternates who is allowed visiting depending on if the inmate's id number is odd or even.

Phone calls to All NY inmates including Ulster

If you want to talk to your inmate over the phone you need to use www.myvconnect.com All calls must go to a land line ONLY. Calls to cell phones are not permitted, no forwarded calls to cells, no threeways or any other workaround you can think of are allowed. Ulster is a classification prison, so your inmate may not be there a very long time before they are classified and transferred to the appropriate facility.  Keep that in mind when setting up phone calls and preparing to visit as it is sometimes easier to wait till they are moved to their more permanent location.

Prisons and cell phones/landlines

Many states Correctional facilities are now allowing calls to cellular phones.  If the institution is one that does not allow calls to cell phones you can try setting up a google voice number, read more about that here.
